SALT LAKE CITY — On Monday, Governor Gary Herbert said if he approved a statewide fireworks and outdoor target shooting ban, he could have been legally challenged. The governor said local governments are best suited to make additional restrictions.
“The state forester has sufficient authority to limit the use in unincorporated areas when it comes to firearms use,” said Governor Herbert.
Local governments would talk with the state forester and potentially restrict target shooting in certain hazardous areas.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Attorney General Mark Shurtleff thinks a part of Utah's immigration law will not be held up in federal court. His comments came during a meeting about the impact of the US Supreme Court's ruling last week on Arizona's immigration law, which is very similar to Utah's. The "Salt Lake Tribune" reports Shurtleff believes the part of the law that makes it a felony to induce an illegal immigrant to the state will be struck down. He thinks most of the rest of the law will be upheld, though.

>>Winter Olympics Bid Expected To Be Recommended

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A meeting will be held this morning about possibly putting together a bid for Utah to host the Winter Olympics again. The "Salt Lake Tribune" reports Utah's Olympic Exploratory Committee will review a report that's probably going to recommend bidding for the Winter Olympics as early as 2022. If the US Olympic Committee ends up supporting an American bid for the 2022 games, then a potential city would have to be picked before the end of next year. Possible bids are being talked about in Denver, Reno-Tahoe and Bozeman, Montana, as well.

>>Fireworks Ban For Salt Lake County

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The threat of wildfires is responsible for a ban on personal fireworks in unincorporated Salt Lake County. Mayor Peter Corroon and United Fire Authority Chief Michael Jensen asked to be included in a statewide ban, citing the high risk of wildfires right now. Fireworks are already banned in the foothills and canyons of the east bench, and west of U-111 on the west bench. Professional displays, as long as they're permitted, are still OK.

>>Red Cross Busy Helping Firefighters, Evacuees

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The American Red Cross is busy helping firefighters and evacuees deal with wildfires across the state. During the past ten days, more than 45-hundred meals and snacks have been provided by the Red Cross, which has also helped 12-hundred evacuees. The Red Cross tells the "Deseret News" they've set up shop in Herriman, Mount Pleasant, Fairview, Delta and Wellington. They also helped another 17 people who were left homeless after an apartment fire in West Valley City over the weekend.
WEBER COUNTY, Utah — Weber County law enforcement is investigating a possible animal abuse case where a Chihuahua was pulled from a campsite fire pit with extensive burn injuries.
Weber County Sheriff’s deputies are still not sure if the small dog fell or was thrown into the fire pit at the campground near the South Fork Canyon area. The Chihuahua was rescued by a good Samaritan.
The dog, ‘Hope,’ suffered from extensive burns to more than 25 percent of her body. She lost a toe and is blinded in her right eye. Police say she is doing quite well despite what she went through.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Salt Lake City is a good place to be a recent college graduate. New ratings by CareerBliss and Business Insider rank Utah's capital city as the ninth-best in the nation for recent college grads. The rankings are based on average salaries for recent grads, job resources, work environment, compensation, growth opportunities, relationships with coworkers, and control over daily work, among others. Salt Lake City's average salary for a recent college graduate is just over 43-thousand dollars a year. St. Louis is Number One on the list.
