(Sanpete County, UT) -- Flash flooding in Sanpete County leaves at least two homes with damages. KSL-TV says heavy rains from the recent Wood Hollow Fire is to blame for yesterday's flash floods. The homes are located between Fountain Green and the fire's burn scar. Another Flash Flood Watch is in effect for that area today.
>>Susan Powell's Parents Try Again For Police Files

(West Valley City, UT) -- The family of a missing West Valley mother is again asking for West Valley City to turn over documents related to her case. A lawyer representing the family of Susan Cox Powell wants the documents in order to use them in a civil lawsuit against Steve Powell, Susan's father-in-law. West Valley Police turned down the request, and this is an appeal to the City Council. Steve Powell is in prison on voyeurism charges. His son, Susan's husband Josh, was the only person of interest when Susan disappeared in December, 2009. He and the couple's two sons died in a gruesome murder-suicide in Washington state earlier this year.

>>Former Sergeant Sues West Jordan Police Over Harrassment

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A former police officer is taking the West Jordan Police Department to federal court. Aaron D. Jensen, a former Sergeant with West Jordan PD, says the department tried to press felony drug charges against him as retaliation for a settlement he reached with the city. That settlement, according to the "Deseret News", was reached over a labor and sexual harrassment claim he filed. He says he was subjected to gay jokes and crude comments for years. He claims a Lieutenant showed him gay pornography on his computer and was even told he couldn't be the father of his wife's baby. He's suing West Jordan police for one-million dollars.

>>Call Center Raises Stakes In 4th District Election

(West Jordan, UT) -- A call center being set up to benefit a Republican congressional candidate is a sign of things to come. Republicans are setting up a call center in West Jordan to seek out supporters and register voters on behalf of Mia Love, who's trying to unseat six-term Democrat Jim Matheson. Matheson has cruised to re-election before, even though he's a Democrat in a conservative district. Nationally, both Democrats and Republicans are targeting Utah's fourth congressional district. Both parties have already promised to send more money to Utah to pay for TV ads for their fourth district candidates this fall.
 
 
 

>>Big Wildfire Burning In Tooele County

(Tooele County, UT) -- A big wildfire is still burning in Tooele County, but luckily it's not threatening anybody or any building. Firefighters estimate the blaze has spread across more than 43-thousand acres, which is an area about twice the size of West Valley City. The Dallas Canyon fire was probably caused by lightning. It started on Friday afternoon and is only about 30 percent contained right now.

>>Is Penmanship Thing Of Past In Utah Schools

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Is good penmanship a thing of the past in Salt Lake City schools? Utah is one of 45 states to adopt something called the Common Core State Standards - a shared curriculum that does not require students to learn cursive writing in school. In the age of computers and iPads educators have been wrestling with the question of whether penmanship matters at all anymore. Officials will make an official recommendation over handwriting skills to the state's school board sometime next year.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Reports of shots fired are under investigation at Rose Park. Police were called last night to an area on West Independence Boulevard. No injuries have been reported. The investigation is ongoing.

>>One Critical After Spanish Fork Crash

(Spanish Fork, UT) -- One person remains critical after being ejected from a vehicle in Spanish Fork. Authorities say a car carrying four adult males was going too fast exiting Interstate 15 and crashed - ejecting two people. Only the condition of one victim is known at this time.

TAYLORSVILLE — A two-alarm fire forced the evacuation of an assisted living center Monday evening.
No one was injured in the fire that started just after 6 p.m. at Legacy House of Taylorsville,

>>Fatal Shooting In Salt Lake

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- One man is dead and another is wounded in a dispute among three men in Salt Lake City. Police arrested the alleged gunman on Grant Street near 400 North. It happened Saturday evening. Names were not available.
>>Lightning-Struck Hiker In Critical Condition

(Summit County, UT) -- A man is in critical condition after he was struck by lightning while hiking in Summit County over the weekend. Summit County Sheriff's deputies say the man was hiking near Amethyst Lake when he was struck late Saturday. He was airlifted to the hospital by helicopter. Amethyst Lake is east of Mirror Lake.

>>Boy Scouts Rescued Off Box Elder County Mountain

(Box Elder County, UT) -- A Boy Scout Troop is safe after a mountain rescue in Perry Canyon in Box Elder County. Five boys and two adults were hiking when they got stranded above Perry Reservoir. Authorities got a call Saturday afternoon and search and rescue crews used ATVs to hunt for them. One of the leaders and the boys were dehydrated and one leader needed care for a cut.

>>Orem Survey Says Big Majority Of Mormon Leaders Vote

(Utah County, UT) -- An Orem survey is showing Mormon leaders register and vote. Utah County consultant Aaron Campbell reviewed voting patterns for 21 Orem LDS stake presidents. He found all are registered and in 2008 they all voted. Fifty-two-percent voted in 2009 and 38-percent in 2011 off year elections. Their turnout was 95-percent in 2010's general election.

>>Principals Spending Time To Network

(Undated) -- Principals in the Granite School District are planning some togetherness time. A number of the district's principals head for the Mill Hollow Outdoor Education Center southeast of Salt Lake Thursday. The trip is a way for the educators to trade ideas for the upcoming school year and checking out the camp facilities for kids. Thousands of students will spend time at the camp this summer.

>>Ambulance Crash Injures Eleven

(Hurricane, UT) -- The Utah Highway Patrol is reporting eleven people were hurt in a crash between an ambulance and a van in Hurricane. The ambulance was running with lights and siren with a patient, his wife and five ambulance crewmembers Saturday night from Colorado City, Arizona to St. George. The worst injury was an eight-year-old van passenger who suffered critical injuries. None of the other injures is thought to be life threatening.

>>Three New Wildfires Burning

(Undated) -- Crews are battling three wildfires that broke out over the weekend. The biggest is the Dallas Canyon Fire, burning out of control in the Cedar Mountain Wilderness in Tooele County. Lightning started the fire late Friday, and the blaze quickly grew to around 15-thousand acres as it burns toward Intestate-80. Firefighters are also battling the Track fire, which is burning east of the Dallas Canyon Fire. Lightning started a third fire, named the Ibapah Fire. It's burned about 300 acres, along the Utah-Nevada line south of Wendover. There's no word on what caused the Track or Ibapah fires.

>>Weber County Fire Marshal Says Fire Danger Still High

(Ogden, UT) -- Weber County's fire marshal doesn't agree with the U.S. Forest Service's assessment of fire danger. Weber Fire Marshal Ted Black says the fire danger is still high. Black says afternoon temperatures are still in the high 90s and this is the time of year when dry lightning is common. Weber County has banned campfires in improved fire pits this summer.


TAYLOSRVILLE — The Unified Police Department has issued an endangered missing advisory for a Taylorsville teen who has not been seen since Saturday night.
Police say 15-year-old Olivia Graham left home Saturday at around 2:00 p.m. after getting into an argument with her mother. She took several of her belongings with her and has not been heard from since that time. She lives in the area of 1800 West and 5000 South.
Graham has several mental disabilities which require medication. Police say she functions at roughly a 9-year- old level. Graham was last seen wearing black athletic shorts, a black and grey tank top and a cream and gray jacket. She has brown hair down to her shoulders, brown eyes, is 5 foot 4 inches and weighs roughly 100 pounds.

Utah Gun Sales Rise After Colorado Movie Theater Shooting

(Undated) -- Utah is joining a growing list of states that are seeing an increase in gun sales in the days after a gunman killed a dozen people in a crowded Colorado movie theater. According to the "Deseret News," the state saw a ten-percent increase in background checks on Friday and Saturday and up to a 40-percent spike Monday. A gun store manager in Ogden claims his gun sales have gone up 70-percent since Friday and over the past two days, he's seen double the number of online orders.

PAGE, Ariz. — Controversy is boiling over the West's biggest coal-fired power plant, located just south of the Utah-Arizona border near the shores of Lake Powell.

(Moab Utah)- A Moab resident didn’t mow the grass in his backyard. Police say it was potentially worth an illicit fortune.
This particular growth consisted of marijuana plants, some 11 feet high, that the Moab Area Narcotics Enforcement Team estimates would have brought $430,000 on the streets, if it had been harvested .
During a search warrant raid early last Friday morning on the home, which is adjacent to the Scott L. Matheson Wetlands Preserve, Moab police and Grand County sheriff’s deputies seized 45 plants — and arrested 51-year-old WQilliam Randall. He facea potential charges of marijuana cultivation and possession, as well as possession of hashish and methamphetamine, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of synthetic narcotics.

>>Police Looking For Rapist Who Pretended To Have Car Trouble

(Orem, UT) -- Orem Police are on the lookout for a man who raped a woman after pretending to have car trouble in the parking lot of a movie theater. Police tell the "Salt Lake Tribune" the woman had just left the Cinemark theater on 800 East when she saw a man with a flashlight standing next to a pickup truck with the hood raised. She offered to help and that's when police say he handed her the flashlight and slammed her head into the side of the truck.

>>Ruling Soon On Motion To Dismss Challenge To Bigamy Law

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A federal judge is promising to decide as soon as possible whether to dismiss a lawsuit that challenges Utah's bigamy law. The lawsuit was filed by the polygamous Utah County family featured in the "Sister Wives" reality TV show. A federal prosecutor stressed in court yesterday that the state already chooses not to prosecute consenting, polygamous adults. The state wants the suit dismissed. Kody Brown and his four wives did not appear in court yesterday. They moved to Nevada after their TV show premiered and said yesterday in a statement they plan to stay there.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A conservative group of lawmakers holding a national conference this week in Salt Lake City say they won't be intimidated by threats from liberals. The "Tribune" is reporting the American Legislative Exchange Council believes its members are in the sights of national critics by way of threats and letters. The groups's executive director told its members attending yesterday's conference that he knows conservative lawmakers are being quote, "attacked by leftist groups" over a variety of issues.

>>Utah Professor Receives Top Honor

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A national top honor is bestowed on a professor at the University of Utah. Chemistry professor Peter Stang has been awarded the 2013 Priestley Medal for lifetime achievement in organic chemistry. The "Tribune" says the 43-year-old professor says he gets his inspiration from Bryce Canyon for ways to better understand the study of organic molecules and how they assemble themselves.


>>Jet Ski Tumbles Onto I-15 Causing Huge Pileup

(Murray, UT) -- A man hauling a jet ski along Interstate 15 is to blame for a multi-car pileup in Murray. Troopers say the owner didn't properly tie-down his jet ski to his trailer which caused it to dump into the middle of the Interstate yesterday morning. Behind the trailer four cars crashed into each other but thankfully no injuries are reported. The jet ski owner was cited.
 
Navajo Generating Station say an Environmental Protection Agency proposal to clear the air in the region's national parks may push the plant into an unacceptable financial situation. They've indicated it could force a shutdown as early as 2017.

>>I-15 Orem Center Street Exit Shuts Down Tonight

(Orem, UT) -- Get ready to deal with a big traffic mess in Orem over the next couple of months. UDOT is going to shut down the entire Orem Center Street exit along I-15 tonight starting at nine o'clock. It's part of the huge I-15 CORE project to rebuild the interstate in Utah County. Not only will on and off ramps be closed until mid-September, but construction work will also force the underpass to close as well. Drivers are being asked to use alternates to avoid the area. Relief from the construction mess is right around the corner, though. The entire CORE project is supposed to be done by the end of the year.

>>Goat Man Mystery Solved

(Ogden, UT) -- Goat Man has been identified, and he was just a guy from California who was preparing to hunt mountain goats. Wildlife officers confirmed to KSTU-TV that a man from California got in touch with them and said he was the one spotted wearing a homemade goat suit on the side of a mountain near Ogden. The Department of Wildlife Resources won't say much more about the man, other than he told them his goat-mimicking was training for a real goat hunt. There was no legal concern with what the man was doing, just a concern that it wasn't very safe to go running around with territorial mountain goats who attack with large horns.

>>Back To Work After Pioneer Day

(Undated) -- It's back to work for most of us today after the Pioneer Day holiday. The 163rd annual Days of '47 parade went off without a hitch yesterday. One woman tells the "Salt Lake Tribune" she spent almost a full day staking out her family's parade-viewing spot near the corner of 200 East and 200 South. Kim Lubber says she had to make sure she could get a 30-foot section in order to accomodate 40 aunts, uncles and children from her family. She says her husband's grandparents started their tradition of staking a claim to a viewing spot 50 years ago.
 
>>Woman Enters Her First Marathon And Wins It

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A veterinary student who's living in Park City is recovering from her first marathon, which she also won. Annie O'Donnell says she originally planned to run a few races this summer while working at the Park City Animal Clinic. She was a runner in college in North Carolina and the 26-year-old eventually decided to enter the Deseret News Marathon yesterday. Amazingly, even though it was her first marathon, she finished first. She tells the paper her first marathon helped fuel her passion for running competitively, and she sees herself running more marathons in the future.
Child Poverty Study Reveals Utah Is Lacking

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A portrait of American children living in poverty is painting a not-so-rosy picture right here in Utah. The "Kids Count" data book released yesterday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation says this state is one of 43 where the number of impoverished children is rising. Between 2005 and 2010 the percentage of Utah kids living below the federal threshold for poverty rose from eleven-percent to 16-percent. The foundation did rank Utah number-eleven nationally for overall kids' well-being.

>>Man Arrested After Ramming Ogden Cop Car

(Ogden, UT) -- Ogden authorities arrest a man after he allegedly rams a police cruiser. Ken Mobley was taken into custody in Weber County and charged with assault, mischief and resisting arrest following yesterday afternoon's incident near 12th Street West. Police say the incident led to several injuries and even prompted one officer to open fire on the suspect. He was not hit.

>>Data Shows Gap In Transit Options And Users

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- While Salt Lake City is number-one nationally for options in mass transit a depressingly low number of residents are actually riding them. An analysis of U.S. Census data by the "Tribune" found that less than three-percent of Salt Lake City workers report using mass transit to get to their jobs. The highest average was in New York City where more than 30-percent of workers ride public transit to get to work. Salt Lake officials say the discrepancy is probably due to the region's love of automobiles combined with the high price for riding the bus and light rail.

>>Woman Who Escaped Fire Succumbs

(West Jordan, UT) -- The woman credited with making a brave escape from a weekend house hire in West Jordan is dead. Family of Frankie Foutz believe the fire indirectly played a part in her death about 40-hours after Sunday's fire. The family says her death was due to complications from lung disease. Foutz's 15-year-old grandson helped her get to safety. The woman's family says they are grateful they at least had an opportunity to say goodbye.

A Phoenix man faces charges of vehicular homicide and drunk driving in a car crash that killed a 57-year-old man.
Thirty-two-year-old
Authorities allege Yazzie was driving drunk and crossed a center line of a road and collided with Montoya's car.
The San Juan County attorney filed charges July 13 and there is a warrant for Yazzie's arrest.
Erik H. Yazzie is accused of causing the April 21 accident that killed Filemon Montoya about 15 miles south of Moab.

(Undated) -- Utahns are celebrating Pioneer Day today. The annual Days of '47 parade begins at nine o'clock this morning at the corner of South Temple and State Street. It will wind through downtown Salt Lake City and end at Liberty Park. Many people, of course, went out last night to stake their claims to prime viewing spots along the parade route. Many government offices are closed today in honor of the arrival of the pioneers to the valley. The Native American community is holding an all-day celebration that will end with fireworks tonight at Liberty Park. There will also be fireworks after the Salt Lake Bees game at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Teen Walks Away From Crash After Falling Down Embankment

(Cottonwood Heights, UT) -- A teenage driver is lucky that she has only a sprained foot after a car crash that sent her plunging ten feet into a concrete well next to a building. Cottonwood Heights police say the girl was on Fort Union Boulevard when she messed up a turn onto Promenade Drive. She went through the intersection, hopped a curb, went down an embankment, through landscaping and then her car fell nose-down into a paved area next to the Hillside Business Center. Amazingly, even though her car was on its side after all that, she had only a sprained foot.

>>Speed Skating Equipment Stolen From Utah Olympic Oval

(Kearns, UT) -- The search is on for some pretty expensive speed skating equipment that was stolen from the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns. Police say two people walked in during regular hours, broke into four lockers and stole whatever they could find. KSTU-TV reports one Olympic hopeful, Patrick Meek, says his training for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia will be affected. He might have to miss a few weeks of practicing on ice because his skates, which are specifically designed for him, were stolen. Thousands of dollars worth of equipment was taken, but Unified Police do have surveillance video to use in their investigation.

>>BYU Closer To Owning Land Under Mountainside "Y"

(Washington, DC) -- Brigham Young University is closer to owning the land under the famous "Y" on the side of a mountain. The House of Representatives has passed a bill sponsored by Congressman Jason Chaffetz which allows the U.S. Forest Service to sell 80 acres to the school at fair market value. Three other lawmakers, including a non-voting member from American Samoa, who are also BYU alumni co-sponsored the bill. There was no opposition in the House and the Senate will now be asked to approve a version of the bill introduced by Senator Orrin Hatch and co-sponsored by Senator Mike Lee. BYU already owns the lower half of the trail that leads to the concrete "Y".

>>Governor Candidate Cooke Encourages Volunteerism

(Undated) -- Democratic governor candidate Peter Cooke is proposing a pair of policies to encourage young Utahns to serve their communities. Cooke wants school districts to give high school students credit toward graduation if they take part in a service learning program. The Democratic candidate also wants to create a program to help college graduates pay off their students loans if they perform volunteer service in their communities. Cooke announced the policy proposals in a news conference at This Is the Place Monument yesterday.

Fire fighters from the BLM and local resources responded to a large size brush fire alon the River Road Highway 128 east of Moab yesterday. Officials closed the River Road for a while...causing large traffic backups...including several river trip buses enroute back to Moab. Cause of the fire was not known as of late yesterday.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Utah is honoring the victims of the Colorado theater shooting. Governor Gary Herbert is directing Utah flags to fly at half staff through Wednesday. President Obama has ordered flags at federal buildings to fly at half staff.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A GOP fundraiser says the charges of rape and kidnapping against him are false and made up. Activist Greg Peterson is accused of attacking four women. Peterson's lawyers say the bail of 750-thousand dollars is excessive and he remains behind bars. Peterson is due in court today.

>>Clear The Air Challenge Begins

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The Clear the Air Challenge is under way in Utah. Governor Gary Herbert and Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker began the effort this weekend to encourage citizens to protect air quality. >>Ogden Shooting Suspect Asks For New Judge In Property Case

(Ogden, UT) -- The man accused of killing a police officer is asking for a new judge in his home property forfeiture case. Matthew David Stewart allegedly killed Weber Morgan Narcotics Strike Force Agent Jared Francom in a January shootout in Ogden that also wounded other officers. The "Salt Lake Tribune" reports Stewart's lawyer says Francom's death left Judge Mark DeCaria "emotionally distraught." The lawyer says there's the possibility Stewart's property seizure case could be prejudiced.
 
 


>>Covey Remembered As Father, Teacher

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Business expert and author Stephen Covey is being remembered as a man of faith, a family man and and a teacher. A memorial service was held Saturday at Utah Valley University that included Governor Gary Herbert and President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Covey's books include "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." He died July 16th at age 80.

WASHINGTON CITY, Utah (AP) - An investigation is under way into a police shootout in Washington City that left a 36- year-old man critically injured.
Jamon Val Cranney of Washington City is accused of failing to comply with officers' commands after a routine traffic stop Friday afternoon and firing shots at them.
Police returned fire, and the suspect was listed in critical condition at Dixie Regional Medical Center.
A warrant for Cranney's arrest, issued Thursday in Iron County, claims he failed to abide by the terms of his probation and complete jail time ordered when he was sentenced on charges of attempted robbery and assault in 2010.

Authorities took a suicidal man into custody Sunday night, but not before he shot at SWAT officers, a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter, a passer-by, and also wounded himself.
Davis County Deputy Scott Harper said a medical helicopter was enroute to treat the man’s three "significant wounds" at about 10:35 p.m. Sunday, moments after the standoff ended in the marshes about four miles north of Salt Lake City International Airport.
Harper said that the man, who was in his 40s, fired at SWAT officers once as they closed in, and they fired tear gas in order to subdue him, but no one else was injured and officers fired no shots.

The city of landing has a new city manager today. He is Jeremy Redd..the city treasuer. City Mananger Chris Webb resigned his 16 year position last week to become Vice President of Air Resources Inc, the parent of Firm of Eagle Air Med..an air ambulance service based n Blanding and Draper Utah. The parent firm also operates air services in several other western state including Hawaii and Alaska. Webb will be responsible for contract and grant negotiations..
>>Republican Activist Charged With Serial Rapes

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A Republican activist who has spent time with Senator Orrin Hatch, Governor Gary Herbert, and most top Republicans in the state, is now accused of being a serial rapist. Greg Peterson was arraigned in court yesterday on 23 felonies, including rape and kidnapping. Court documents show he's accused of using his 3-thousand square foot cabin in Heber twice to lure women there after he met them online. That same cabin has been used for Republican barbecues and get-togethers. In other attacks, victims say he aggressively attacked them after lunch dates. He's in jail and his bail has been set at 750-thousand dollars.

>>BYU Student Social Security Numbers Possibly Leaked

(Provo, UT) -- There's concern in Provo that as many as eight-hundred student social security numbers were leaked. According to "The Universe", former and current students could have had their personal information stolen when a database was accessed without authorization last month. For about 24 hours, the sensititve information was vulnerable. The Registrar's office is taking steps to prevent something like this from happening again.

(Bluffdale, UT) -- Friends and co-workers are remembering the woman who died after she was hit by a bus while trying to help somebody else. Ali Hostetter was a history, government, humanties and law teacher at North Star Academy in Bluffdale, according to the "Salt Lake Tribune". AT the school yesterday, she was described as an out-of-the-box thinker and passionate educator. One of her big plans for next year was an inter-disciplinary study on the zombie apocalypse. Police in Murray say she was hit by a UTA bus on 45-hundred south when she crossed the street to help a woman who had just crashed her scooter.

(Ogden, UT) -- The man who took pictures of somebody dressed as a mountain goat on Ben Lomond Peak is working with wildlife officers, trying to identify who it was. Coty Creighton tells "KSTU-TV" he used binoculars and could clearly see the man was wearing a homemade goat suit complete with heavy gloves so he could crawl on his hands and knees. He says they were the only people around for miles and it was obvious the person was trying to catch up with a real herd of mountain goats. The DWR admits what "goatman" is doing is not illegal, but probably not a good idea for his health. Mountain goats are territorial and can attack with their horns.

 
>>Park City Police Seek Help Catching Sling-Shooter

(Park City, UT) -- Park City police are on the hunt for a man who's been hitting buildings, moving vehicles and people with a sling-shot. Police Chief Wade Carpenter says at least six buildings and stationary vehicles have been shot with marbles over the past few months. Officers revved up their search this past weekend when the suspect started targeting people. Businesses are offering a reward for information leading to his arrest.

>>Teenage Boy Injured In Drive-By Shooting In WVC

(West Valley City, UT) -- An investigation is under way in West Valley City where a 15-year-old boy was injured in a drive-by shooting. The incident happened around 9:30 last night at 4093 West and 4300 South. Police say the victim's gunshot wound was minor. They didn't identify a suspect or a possible motive in the case.

>>Police: Woman Rams Minivan Into Husband's Car With Mistress Inside

(American Fork, UT) -- A young woman is accused of ramming her minivan into her husband's car in American Fork after spotting him with his alleged mistress. The 30-year-old woman was arrested Thursday on aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct charges. Police say she had her two young children with her when she hit the man's vehicle on West Main Street and started yelling obscenitie. No injuries were reported.

>>Security Questioned After Fugitive Tries To Steal Plane

(St. George, UT) -- Security is being questioned at the St. George Municipal Airport after a man stole a plane, caused damage, then killed himself in the cockpit. Assistant City Manager Marc Mortensen isn't sure how Sky West Pilot Brian Hedglin got on board the SkyWest plane yesterday. He used a rug to clumb over a razor wire fence to get to the tarmac. Once aboard, he backed up the plane from a jet bridge, clipping it, and caused damage to the terminal and parking lot before he stopped. He was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Colorado Springs man was wanted for a murder of his girlfriend last week.

>>Whooping Cough Cases Spike In Salt Lake County

(Undated) -- Doctors across Utah are seeing an increase in the number of whooping cough cases, and there's an even sharper increase in Salt Lake County. The Salt Lake Valley Health Department tells the "Salt Lake Tribune" 280 cases of whooping cough have been reported in the valley this year. The real fear is that each case probably represents 10 or maybe 20 cases that go unreported. Whooping cough, or pertussis, spreads through human-to-human contact and the cough can last for more than three months. It's particularly hard on children and babies, but more teenagers and adults have been getting it lately.

>>Salt Lake Lawyer Talks About Knife Attack

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The Salt Lake City attorney who was attacked in his home by a man with a knife says he's still weak and he will need months more to recover. Steven Killpack sent an e-mail to reporters, describing a confrontation with Matthew Wall in his home. Killpack says he confronted Wall, who said he was invited in to the home by somebody else. After a struggle, Killpack ended up walking down the street knocking on doors for help. Wall has since been charged with burglary and attempted murder. Killpack thanked fellow lawyers and even prosecutors for adjusting their calendars and picking up some of his cases while he recovers.

>>Overloaded Power Strip Caused Fire That Destroyed Syracuse House

(Syracuse, UT) -- A house fire last week is serving as a reminder about the dangers of overloading power strips. Syracuse Police tell the "Deseret News" an overloaded power strip started the fire that gutted a home and burned three cars. The house was worth around 200-thousand dollars and the owners say they're just going to knock it down to the foundation. The fire on Friday was threatening nearby homes for a brief time because of high winds, but firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading. Luckily, nobody was hurt.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- If you're still trying to score tickets for "Wicked", which opens today at the Capitol Theater, then you'll get a chance before each show during a lottery. "Wicked", the smash Broadway musical about the witches from "The Wizard of Oz", is coming to Utah for the second time. Beginning today and for each performance through August 26th, there will be a drawing for a limited number of 25-dollar tickets. You have to show up in person at the Captiol Theater box office two-and-a-half-hours before showtime in order to register.

(Cache County, UT) -- A dismissed Utah State University official is facing charges in Cache County of misusing more than 200-thousand dollars and much of that was scholarship money. Jennifer Putnam Twiss was the school's director of enrollment services. Twiss has pleaded not guilty to theft forgery and embezzlement. She was at the USU for more than ten years and is a 2001 graduate.

>>All Evacuations Lifted For Quail Fire
(Alpine, UT) -- The rain yesterday in Alpine helped firefighters so much, all evacuation orders have now been lifted. They're still trying to get the Quail Fire under control. At last report, the fire had burned about two-thousand acres and is only about ten-percent contained. Originally, 325 homes were evacuated because of the fire, but the final evacuation orders were lifted yesterday afternoon.

>>Salt Lake City Gets First Rainfall In 38 Days

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Today is the first day after a very bad dry streak was broken at Salt Lake City International Airport. Yesterday, the National Weather Service had a measurable amount of rainfall at the airport for the first time in 38 days. A forecaster tells the "Salt Lake Tribune" that although it's nice to get any rain, yesterday's rain would have to be repeated for a month in order to really help stop the spread of wildfires. Moab set a record with a torrential downpour yesterday afternoon...48 hundreths of a inch in half an hour beating a 1926 record and setting another record of the largest of amount of precip in half an hour.

>>Fake ID Mill Busted

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Two men are accused of running a fake ID mill that turned out everything from green cards to driver's licenses. "Fox 13" reports the arrests followed a three-month investigation. The two suspects are accused of making thousands of dollars selling the fake documents to illegal immigrants. They had just about everything for sale , including social security cards and temporary driving permits, and would offer a package rate for multiple ID's.

>>Arrest In Stabbing Of Defense Attorney

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A man is in jail accused of attacking a well-known defense attorney, who's doing much better in the hospital. Matthew Christopher Wall was booked into jail yesterday on suspicion of attempted murder. Steven Killpack, a private attorney who once represented one of Elizabeth Smart's kidnappers when he was a public defender, was stabbed in his University-area home. He was originally in critical condition but has since been upgraded. The "Salt Lake Tribune" reports Wall has a history of drug and theft charges.

 
 
 
 
 
>>Earlier Stakeouts Could Be Approved For Days Of '47 Parade

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- If the Salt Lake City Council approves a new parade ordinance later this month, you'll be able to stake out your spot along the Days of '47 parade a little earlier. The City Council is considering whether to allow people to claim their viewing spots at 6pm the night before the Pioneer Day tradition. Right now, you can't start before 8pm. The Council will also reconsider its ban on throwing candy at parades. Even if that ban is lifted, don't expect to see a sweeter Days of '47. Parade organizers tell the "Salt Lake Tribune" they won't allow candy to be thrown during the parade because children could scramble under floats and horses to get it.
PARK VALLEY, Box Elder County, Utah – A man was shot in the stomach during an altercation in Dove Creek Estates, located about 20 miles west of Park Valley, on Thursday night.
Box Elder County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Kevin Potter said in a release on Thursday that at around 8:40 p.m, a 61-year-old Salt Lake City resident called 911 to report that he had just shot a man who was threatening him with a gun near 68200 West 15722 North, near Park Valley, a small town just south of the Utah-Idaho border.
The victim, a 41-year-old Ogden man, was shot in the stomach with a handgun. The victim’s wife, who was present at the time of the shooting, drove him away from the residence and called for medical assistance. He was taken via AirMed to a Salt Lake County hospital
VERNAL — A 10-year-old Vernal girl has died from injuries she suffered when she was knocked from a horse in a riding arena, according to the Vernal Police Department.
The girl was riding during a barrel racing event Tuesday at Western Park when she struck a pole at the end of the arena and was knocked to the ground, Assistant Vernal Police Chief Keith Campbell said in a statement.
 
 
Park City
A 4-year-old boy died after, police say, a headstone fell on him Thursday evening.
Park City Police say the incident happened at 6 p.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery, 402 Silver King Drive. Officers were dispatched to the area on a report that a young boy was injured by a falling headstone.
Responding officers arrived at the scene, and took the boy to Park City Medical Center for treatment, but he later died from his injuries.
The boy was not identified Thursday, but police said his family resides in Lehi.

Some Alpine Families Return Home As Crews Fight Quail Fire

(Alpine, UT) -- Between 175 and 200 families have returned to their homes in Alpine, but more than 300 remain evacuated as crews continue to battle the Quail Fire. The blaze that blew up within hours after starting Tuesday afternoon now covers slightly less than two-thousand acres, down from an initial estimate of five-thousand acres. Firefighters have contained only five-percent of the blaze.

>>Fireworks Start West Jordan, Cottonwood Heights Fires

(Undated) -- Fireworks started a pair of fires last night, on the east and west sides of the Salt Lake Valley. Unified Fire Authority firefighters put out a blaze that burned a half-acre and came within 30 feet of four homes around 11 last night in the area of 27-hundred East and 72-hundred South. About 20 minutes before that fire broke out people playing with fireworks started a fire that did three-thousand dollars in smoke damage to a home in West Jordan.

>>Seven Wildfires Burning In Utah

(Undated) -- At least seven wildfires are burning across Utah right now. More than 15-hundred people are still evacuated in Kane County, where State Highway 14 remains closed as crews battle the stubborn Shingle Fire. Firefighters completely contained the Millville Canyon Fire last night. A new blaze, called the Uinta Fire, started yesterday in the Ashley National Forest in Uintah County.

>>Ogden Police Seek Leads In Arson Brush Fire

(Ogden, UT) -- Fire officials in Ogden are asking for help in finding whoever started a fire that burned a dozen acres and surrounded houses and an apartment complex near the mouth of Ogden Canyon. Ogden Fire Marshal Brandon Thueson says investigators found "items at the scene" that indicate someone set the fire deliberately. It started at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, a quarter-mile west of the mouth of Ogden Canyon, at 12th Street and State Road 39.

>>Methadone Deaths Prompt Warning To Doctors

(Undated) -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking doctors to slow down on prescribing the powerful painkiller methadone. The CDC says methadone accounts for one-third of all painkiller deaths in more than a dozen states. The number of methadone-related deaths in Utah has dropped in recent years, on increasing efforts to educate doctors and the public. The deputy director of the state Department of Health, Robert Rolfs, says methadone deaths in Utah are down from 120 a year between 2004 and 2008 to around 60 to 70 a year.

>>National Guard, American Legion Offer Flag Retirement

(Undated) -- The Utah National Guard and the American Legion are again offering to help people respectfully retire their worn U.S. flags. They're accepting flags to be burned in a retirement ceremony at Spanish Fork City Fairgrounds. The 14th annual retirement ceremony is scheduled for July 18th. Along with the ceremony, the event will include a performance by the Guard's 23rd Army Band, a 21-gun salute, and guest speakers.

PAYSON, Utah — Police say a 36-year-old man was killed at a house party in Payson early Wednesday morning. An adult and a juvenile were later arrested in connection to the crime.
The incident happened around 3:45 a.m. at 700 East and 644 North where police say the homeowner, William KC Wright, was fatally stabbed.
Wright was throwing a 4th of July party when a group of teens wanted to join. And because there was alcohol, police say Wright turned them away. An argument followed and the homeowner was stabbed.
Wright was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died as a result of his injuries. The party had several witnesses and by noon police say they had tracked down who they were looking for.
Police arrested 45-year-old Keenan Thompson of Spanish Fork and a 15-year-old boy in connection to the stabbing. Thompson is being held for first-degree murder. Both may face charges of obstruction of justice

Firetrucks and floats the mainstay of most parades as was the infamous Gadianton Band in the Blanding Parade. riding an aticulated modified 50's Chevy farm truck the nearly 20 musicians made merry.
Earflier, Lt Governor Greg Bell spoke at the Blanding mayors Prayer breakfast and said the greatest challange to america now and in the future is the national debt. He said we have to encourage independence and not depend on give-away money from the feds.

SALT LAKE CITY — On Monday, Governor Gary Herbert said if he approved a statewide fireworks and outdoor target shooting ban, he could have been legally challenged. The governor said local governments are best suited to make additional restrictions.
“The state forester has sufficient authority to limit the use in unincorporated areas when it comes to firearms use,” said Governor Herbert.
Local governments would talk with the state forester and potentially restrict target shooting in certain hazardous areas.
>>AG: Part Of Utah Immigration Law Won't Survive
(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Attorney General Mark Shurtleff thinks a part of Utah's immigration law will not be held up in federal court. His comments came during a meeting about the impact of the US Supreme Court's ruling last week on Arizona's immigration law, which is very similar to Utah's. The "Salt Lake Tribune" reports Shurtleff believes the part of the law that makes it a felony to induce an illegal immigrant to the state will be struck down. He thinks most of the rest of the law will be upheld, though.

>>Winter Olympics Bid Expected To Be Recommended

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A meeting will be held this morning about possibly putting together a bid for Utah to host the Winter Olympics again. The "Salt Lake Tribune" reports Utah's Olympic Exploratory Committee will review a report that's probably going to recommend bidding for the Winter Olympics as early as 2022. If the US Olympic Committee ends up supporting an American bid for the 2022 games, then a potential city would have to be picked before the end of next year. Possible bids are being talked about in Denver, Reno-Tahoe and Bozeman, Montana, as well.

>>Fireworks Ban For Salt Lake County

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The threat of wildfires is responsible for a ban on personal fireworks in unincorporated Salt Lake County. Mayor Peter Corroon and United Fire Authority Chief Michael Jensen asked to be included in a statewide ban, citing the high risk of wildfires right now. Fireworks are already banned in the foothills and canyons of the east bench, and west of U-111 on the west bench. Professional displays, as long as they're permitted, are still OK.

>>Red Cross Busy Helping Firefighters, Evacuees

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The American Red Cross is busy helping firefighters and evacuees deal with wildfires across the state. During the past ten days, more than 45-hundred meals and snacks have been provided by the Red Cross, which has also helped 12-hundred evacuees. The Red Cross tells the "Deseret News" they've set up shop in Herriman, Mount Pleasant, Fairview, Delta and Wellington. They also helped another 17 people who were left homeless after an apartment fire in West Valley City over the weekend.
WEBER COUNTY, Utah — Weber County law enforcement is investigating a possible animal abuse case where a Chihuahua was pulled from a campsite fire pit with extensive burn injuries.
Weber County Sheriff’s deputies are still not sure if the small dog fell or was thrown into the fire pit at the campground near the South Fork Canyon area. The Chihuahua was rescued by a good Samaritan.
The dog, ‘Hope,’ suffered from extensive burns to more than 25 percent of her body. She lost a toe and is blinded in her right eye. Police say she is doing quite well despite what she went through.

New ratings by CareerBliss and Business Insider rank Utah's capital city as the ninth-best in the nation for recent college grads. The rankings are based on average salaries for recent grads, job resources, work environment, compensation, growth opportunities, relationships with coworkers, and control over daily work, among others. Salt Lake City's average salary for a recent college graduate is just over 43-thousand dollars a year. St. Louis is Number One on the list.

>>UHP Trooper Falls To Death During Rescue

(Mount Olympus, UT) -- Friends and family are remembering Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Aaron Beesley as a brilliant man. Beesley fell to his death while rescuing two teenagers from Mount Olympus on Saturday evening. UHP Colonel Daniel Fuhr says Beesley loved to help find and rescue people. Officials say Beesley stayed on the mountain after finding and loading up the two hikers into the rescue helicopter. They believe when he went to retrieve his medical bag, lost his footing and fell 60 feet off a cliff. Fellow UHP officers say Beesley not only worked search and rescue, but also help develop smart phone apps for the UHP and acted as assistant fire chief in the town of Corinne. Beesley leaves behind a wife and three young boys.

Moab Utah — This past week the "Lone Ranger" is riding again into Utah's adventure capital as shooting for the film version of the popular television show is under way in Moab. The movie stars Johnny Depp and brings with it exposure for the state and revenue for local and state coffers.
"As the economy goes, so goes the film industry," said Utah Film Commission Director Marshall Moore. The state's "sweet spot" is typically independent films, cable and network television, with the occasional blockbuster like the "Lone Ranger" shooting here.
The film is just the latest to take advantage of a decision to provide monetary incentives to those who choose to do business in Utah. "It's where we've been making our living for the last few years," Moore said.
>>Two Wildfires Spark In Rural Utah

(Logan, UT) -- Two brand new Utah wildfires are breaking out in Kane and Cache counties. Flames from the new wildfires sparked for the first time yesterday afternoon. Authorities say target shooters may have started the 120-acre Cache County fire in Millville Canyon just south of Logan. And in Swains and Stout creeks in Kane County residents from about 100 cabins are being evacuated as another 500 acres burn southeast of Cedar City. Fire crews report ten active wildfires in Utah at this time.

>>Teen Runs Over Another After Fight In Kearns

(Kearns, UT) -- An altercation after a party in Kearns is under investigation after a driver allegedly runs over a teenager on purpose. According to Unified Police, the 17-year-old victim was still in critical condition last night after 18-year-old Angelo Ginori drove over him while he lay prone on a lawn Saturday night. Police say Ginori and the victim had just been involved in fisticuffs before the vehicular assault. Ginori is jailed on charges including attempted homicide.

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The month of June ties for the driest on record in Salt Lake City. Quoting national weather officials the "Tribune" says the mere trace of rain officially recorded over the whole month equaled the 1994 record for driest June ever in Salt Lake City history. The trace amount is equal to less than one-one-thousandth of an inch of precipitation. They city's records go back to the year 1928.

>>SLC Residents Want To Can Brewery's Expansion Plans

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Folks from one Salt Lake City neighborhood want to can a local brewery's expansion plans. Epic Brewery on State Street faces fierce opposition from some residents on nearby Edison Street. Officials representing Epic Brewery are petitioning the city to re-zone the area which would pave the way for an expansion onto Edison Street. Residents however enjoy their currently quaint lifestyle and tell the "Tribune" they don't want it marred by heavy traffic. Planning Commissioners will discuss the matter at a public hearing July 11th.

>>Barbecue Burns Down West Valley City Apartments

(West Valley City, UT) -- About 20 people are homeless this morning after fire destroyed two apartment buildings in West Valley City over the weekend. West Valley City Fire Chief John Evans says high winds blew flames from an outdoor barbecue fire into one building, and the flames quickly spread to a neighboring unit. Fire consumed both buildings within ten minutes. Fire crews kept the flames from spreading to nearby apartments.

>>Utah County Cities Discourage Water Use

(Undated) -- Officials in at least a half-dozen Utah County communities are asking people to use less water, in this hot, record-dry summer. The Central Utah Water Conservancy District's Daryl Devey says conserving water is particularly important this year, when mountain snowpack is less than 50-percent of last year's total. The district offers classes on landscaping that makes economical and effective use of scarce water supplies. The district's website says 60-percent of the average home's water is used to irrigate lawns and gardens.
