Moab Pride, The Nation’s 2nd Largest Small-Town Pride Festival, Celebrates Its 3rd Anniversary September 27-29th, 2013. Moab Pride expects to triple its attendance for its third anniversary next month September 27-29th, 2013. This unique event is the second largest small-town Pride Festival in the United States. So it's not exactly the kind of place that first pops in to your mind when you think about pioneering LGBTQ pride movements. But in the summer of 1993, Connell O'Donovan and Keith Randall planted a seed.

SOUNDS OF THE 2012 MOAB PRIDE FESTIVAL AND VISIBILITY MARCH COME UP IN THE BACKGROUND

CONNELL O'DONOVAN: We got 11 of our closest friends (laughs). Four gay guys and a bunch of lesbians and straight allies and we started off at -- at Woody's, right?

KEITH RANDALL: Woodys, yup.

CONNELL O'DONOVAN: You know, carrying some rainbow flags and a few signs...

KEITH RANDALL: ...tambourines and drums (laughs)...

CONNELL O'DONOVAN: ...you know, and marched up one side of main street, crossed the street, down the other side of main street and back to Woody's.

KEITH LAUGHS

They called it March on Moab and as far as we know, it was the town's first Gay Pride Parade. They did it again the next summer, then things were pretty quiet for a while.

But in 2011, the Pride movement really surfaced in Moab, this time with a new group of organizers, a mission statement and a full-blown festival. Now, in 2013, Moab Pride is heading into its third year. Woody's is still here. But those 11 people back in the early nineties, have become nearly 500 marchers in Moab Pride's visibility parade today.

The city of Moab issued a proclamation recognizing the Moab Pride Festival as a time for the whole town to celebrate its dignity...it's shared humanity. Here's Moab's mayor, known locally as simply "Mayor Dave."

MAYOR DAVE: Hopefully the example that we've set is that, you know, there's room enough in this world for all of us and you know, we're all God's people and let's celebrate that and let's...let's honor that and let's enjoy that.

WEST JORDAN — A West Jordan judge has ruled that Clark Aposhian must stay away from his ex-wife and her new husband, but Utah's top gun lobbyist will get his firearms back. After two run-ins since 2010 between Aposhian and Ronald Meyer, who is married to Aposhian's ex-wife, a 3rd District Court judge ordered Tuesday that a temporary civil stalking injunction issued earlier this year will remain in place for three years. (Juab County Utah)- Three routes penetrating the Deep Creek Mountains are the subject of a proposed court settlement that is hoped to serve as a "template" for resolving thousands of other quiet-title claims Utah and its counties are waging against the federal government. In the consent decree filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City, Juab County agreed to abandon some of its rights-of-way claims and enact ordinances limiting motorized use in its share of the 69,000-acre wilderness study area (WSA) blanketing the scenic West Desert range.

If signed by Judge Tena Campbell, the decree will grant the state title to portions of routes accessing Trout Creek, Granite and Tom’s canyons on the Deep Creeks’ east slope. The latter two extend a few miles into the WSA where historical evidence favored the county’s claim. Years ago, for example, locals gathered at a clearing known as Camp Ethel in Granite Canyon, so the state gets the road up to this spot. BLM will monitor this area for off-road impacts and will be free to close the upper part of the road if ORVs go off trail. SALT LAKE CITY — The Outdoor Retailer’s Summer Market has brought thousands of people to Utah to showcase innovative new designs and technology in outdoor merchandise. But exhibitors are also trying to guard against counterfeiters, thieves and industrial espionage at this expo, to protect their new products before they hit store shelves. Organizers of the massive trade show have posted rules against unauthorized photography on the back of admission badges and created a special hotline to report suspected cases of photography and spying. There is security at the expo, but some companies with proprietary products have taken steps to hire private security.
