>>Nine Utah Counties Declare State Of Emergency

(Undated) -- Nine Utah counties are declaring a state of emergency due to the shutdown of the federal government. KSL-TV says commissioners from Washington, Kane, San Juan, Garfield, Seiver, Grand, Iron, Wayne and Piute counties made their declarations due to chronic "economic disruption." The counties in question say tourism has decreased rapidly since the shutdown began. The Governor's Office is considering the declarations by all nine counties. Officials from Washington, Kane, San Juan, Garfield, Sevier, Grand, Iron, Wayne, and Paiute counties – along with the representatives from Coconino and Mohave counties in Arizona — met in person and via conference call Monday to discuss the mounting economic impacts of national park closures in their respective areas.

The Grand County Council is meeting in emergency session at 8am this morning formalize their delcaration of emergency. In San Juan County, County Commissioner Phil Lyman in a statement issued last night on Facebok, says:

"We are not going to sit idle while the Federal Government destroys the local economy! They are spending more money to keep people out than it would cost to let people in. This Wednesday, the plan is to peacefully remove the barriers to places like Lake Powell, Natural Bridges, Canyonlands, and Hovenweep, and allow visitors to enjoy THEIR public places. Sadly, there have already been thousands of people laid off right here in Utah (over 500 at Lake Powell alone). Folks at Aramark said that they would not reopen even if the Shutdown ends because they are so close to the end of their season anyway. Thousands of visitors who, collectively, would have spent millions of dollars, have been locked out. While this is an urgent economic issue, it is also a jurisdictional conflict. Counties (and States) are more than stewards of the federal estate, they have power to govern within their respective geographic boundaries." Unquote.

We will be speaking with Commissioner Lyman this morning on Canyon Country, KCYN-FM.
