SAN JUAN COUNTY — Several leaders of San Juan County said they're going to move the barricades implemented by the government shutdown and let people back onto Lake Powell. In a live interview yesterday on KCYN and KCPX, San Juan Commissioner Phil Lyman said...

"The plan is to peacefully remove the barriers to places like Lake Powell, Natural Bridges, Canyonlands and Hovenweep and allow visitors to enjoy their places," We are not going to sit idle while the Federal Government destroys the local economy! They are spending more money to keep people out than it would cost to let people in." Lyman added in our interview...."This is not anarchy. This is government doing what government does which is look after the health and welfare and safety of their citizens. And as a county commissioner, I made a promise to do that for my citizens."

Word this morning is that san Juan County will be ready to act today or tomorrow. Other counties, including Grand County, may be planning similar action.










 

(Salt Lake)- Gov. Gary Herbert sent a letter to President Barack Obama requesting the authority to reopen the parks with state and private dollars, but similar requests from other states have been denied. The Governor sent theletter after recieving declarations of Emergeny yesterday from 9 southern Utah Counties including Grand and San Juan.

"What we’re saying today is we have local communities that are hurting, we have local businesses that are suffering open the roads," said Ally Isom, the governor’s deputy chief of staff. "Allow people to come in, and allow those vendors to regain their business.

(Moab Utah)- Several Grand County Residents were taking matters into their own hands yesterday. A small group of guides and outfitters drove past the closed sign at Arches and took pictures posted on the internet, holding hand lettered signs..one which read: "My Government threw me under the bus." The pictures are also posted on the kcynfm.com web site in the news section.

Following yesterday's emergency Grand County Council emergency meeting on the issue, Grand County Horseback Ride outfitter John Hauer said he also felt some personal action was in order, and as he drove home along the river road, attempted to remove a chain and sign closing a BLM Campground. He told KCYN he was intercepted by a BLM Ranger and threatened with 500 dollar citation and fine.


WASHINGTON D.C. — Members of Utah's delegation have held firm in opposition as tension continues to rise in the capitol. In the past three months, Senator Mike Lee has been a key figure in opposing the budget and Obamacare. Lee spoke in front of the Senate Tuesday afternoon urging his compatriots to "hold their ground." Lee used an analogy about a trip to the grocery store to make his point.

"The cashier said ‘OK, here's what you owe for these items. But we won't allow you to buy just bread, milk and eggs. In order to buy items at this store, we will also require you to purchase a half ton of iron ore, a bucket of nails, a book about cowboy poetry and a Barry Manilow album,' " Lee said.

>>V-A Workers Not Receiving Paychecks

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Hundreds of employees at Salt Lake City's Veterans Benefits Administration office are not receiving paychecks because of the government shutdown. The "Tribune" says more than 150 workers have been sent home while another 400 are considered on-duty without pay. Nationwide nearly seven-thousand V-A employees are on furlough. However, more than two-thousand employees at the V-A Medical Center in Salt Lake City are still at work.


>>Man Dead After Car Plunges Into W-V-C Canal

(West Valley City, UT) -- A man in West Valley City is dead after his car mysteriously careened into a canal. Authorities say the car driven by Antonio Quintanilla accelerated through an intersection before it plowed through a fence and into the irrigation canal near 64-hundred West Park Way Boulevard yesterday. Witnesses say the driver came to a complete stop about 100-yards away from the intersection before he started again suddenly.


>>Meth Bust Lands Three Arrested In Park City

(Park City, UT) -- A major methamphetamine operation in Utah with ties to a Mexican drug cartel is now shut down thanks to Park City authorities. Three people were arrested over the weekend and detectives seized more than 17-pounds of the illegal substance. The arrests are the result of a three-month investigation and officers say more arrests will be made. KSL-TV says the operation is allegedly tied to the notorious Mexican Sinaloa Cartel, regarded as one of the most powerful drug trafficking groups in the world.

>>Herbert Announces Cox As Lieutenant

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The state of Utah has a new Lieutenant Governor. Yesterday, Governor Herbert announced Republican Representative Spencer Cox will replace outgoing Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell. Cox is the 38-year-old lawmaker known for calling the impeachment hearings against Utah Attorney General John Swallow. Previously, Cox was Mayor of Fairview.

>>Woman Dies After Trailer Truck Runs Over Her

(Ogden, UT) -- Ogden police say an argument between two people ended with a woman being run over and killed by a semi-trailer truck. The 26-year-old victim was arguing with someone near 155 South and 750 West when she fell under the rear wheels of the massive truck. Authorities don't know why the victim fell but KSL-TV says she had a history of medical issues. The names of those involved have not been released.

>>Gathering Creates Awareness For Violence Victims

(West Valley City, UT) -- Residents in West Valley City are coming together in an effort to raise awareness for victims of domestic violence. About 40 people gathered last night at City Hall for the march and reception. Organizers say domestic violence victims can be any age or gender. They are hoping the march will help encourage people to inform the police if they believe they've been victimized.

>>Choir Announces Special Christmas Guests

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The Mormon Tabernacle Choir will welcome two big-time guest performers at its Christmas concerts this year. Choir officials tell KSL-TV that American soprano Deborah Voigt and British actor John Rhys-Davis will join the company at its annual Temple Square concerts in December. Voigt is known for her work as the heroine in Italian operas while Rhys-Davis is best known for his work as "Gimli" the dwarf in "Lord of the Rings."
